Those words, said a lot about people´s attitudes at the early stages of the Russian revolution, before the Bolsheviks seized power and the Accursed Days began.
It just strikes me, at how similar it is to what is heppening here in the Western world of 2019.

People today, empowered by technologies, have become giants in their own eyes, everyone has a voice, has freedom to express his her self and to be heard.

And the words of Dr Zhivago, Boris Pasternak´s immortal hero come back to tell us that we are repeating the errors of the past.
“And how huge everyone is and how disconcerted by his own size. Have you noticed? As if overwhelmed by himself, by the revelation of his greatness.”

Me extraña que el jefe del estado tenga la temeridad de hablar de una democracia garantizada por derecho y ley.

Esa es mi respuesta a un Rey que habla de que “No es admisible apelar a una supuesta democracia por encima de la ley”

Magical realism, a misunderstood genre. https://paulogarra.com/en/2019/02/17/magical-realism-a-misunderstood-genre/ https://paulogarra.com/en/2019/02/17/magical-realism-a-misunderstood-genre/#respond Sun, 17 Feb 2019 13:13:13 +0000 https://www.paulogarra.com/?p=16622 Magical Realism, a genre, a style of fiction with roots often attributed to South American authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marques in his book, Cien años de soledad, a hundred years of solitude. This definition or origin is purely the fruit of a handful of university don´s heatedly inspired imaginations, and desire to impose upon literature their personal mark.
In fact this Genre is often used as an inspired device, not only by writers wishing to speak euphemistically of dark episodes in the history of colonialism, as our learned bretheren allege, but to deal with a multitude of situations in history and the present time, when the device fits more aptly than would lame reality.
Louis de Bernieres in his masterful trilogy based in South America, coincidentally, uses magical realism most wonderfully, to perhaps cover dark happenings in some instances, but also and mainly in pursuit of humour and a degree of happy levity in the telling of a tale.

God bless Narendra Modi, and good people all over. Never lose hope or strength the Good will always prevail.

Excerpt from the book “Malak Desert Child” chap. 14 https://paulogarra.com/en/2019/01/27/excerpt-from-the-book-malak-desert-child-chap-14/ https://paulogarra.com/en/2019/01/27/excerpt-from-the-book-malak-desert-child-chap-14/#respond Sun, 27 Jan 2019 18:19:02 +0000 https://www.paulogarra.com/?p=16593 Excerpt chap fourteen.. The woman can only be described as regal, her stance, her beauty, her enormous eyes; she is holding a small girl by the shoulders who also walks with a confident bearing and is stunning to gaze upon as her features are as of an angel: soft, cherubic, enchanting. At that precise moment, a ray of light––be it sunlight or an electric beam which has slipped––chances to settle on her face. The General glances around to locate the source but finds none, a superstitious shiver runs through his body, and he shakes it off. The captain takes a pace forward.

“General, may I present…” but he is not allowed to finish as the small girl wriggles away from her mother’s grasp.

“We’re not afraid of you!” she shrills out in her small voice, pointing her finger accusingly at the General, her mother rushing up. For a few seconds total silence reigns, all eyes are on Chenouali not knowing what to expect. He has gone cold all over. What is happening? He tries to think and then deep in his head come the screams, but he pushes them down. They are waiting, Khizr. He steels himself. Then the suspicion of a smile appears on his face.

“Malak! Malak! I am so sorry.”

“No, please, let her come, Madam, and tell me, Malak,” the whole tent is watching silently, enrapt by the scene between the little girl and the mighty General. “Why should you be afraid of me? I thought you were my guests and also my friends.”

“We have never had any friends, and I have always had to fight to protect my sister, now we have clothes to wear and food to eat, but Jeedah tells me not to trust you until your eyes are true.”

The other children came behind them, they pulled the ribbons in the dresses of the girls, and they pushed and kicked them, said terrible things, called them she-camels. The man was smitten with the child. Her beauty, wisdom, and pride were amazing for a little girl living in abject poverty. And, of course, he realised that the child somehow was aware of her power as a woman to be, of her loveliness and charm, and knew how to use them given the right opportunity. She knew instinctively, intuitively, he thought, that he was the type of man who would love children and hold sacred their right to be children. Of course, there was also the possibility that she just believed that foreigners were the greener side of her particular river.

I was offered publication by various publishing houses, two in India and one in the UK. When I realised however that my work would no longer be what I had intended, and that my messages would be more or less rubbed out by market conscious reviewers, my book rewritten, I refused pointblank and chose the more ardous road of self publishing, again.

However, this time I decided to sell my property and fund a campaign of marketing to equal any established publishers, with a view to setting my work before the eyes of as many readers as possible and being approved or condemned as a writer by them.

I would be forever grateful if you will give my book Malak due consideration, and if you have the time, to write a brief review in Amazon for it. Thank you all.

I write, and in my work, I feel that i am expressing myself to someone else and hope to receive some form of communication in reply, be it a critique, praise, observation or mere comment.
